Gallery Three – Clay Monoprints
CLAY MONOPRINTS This, form of art was first introduced by artist Mitch Lyons in 1968. China clay slip colored with permanent pigments is applied in layers on a solid clay slab form. As each layer of pigmented slip is applied, a variety of materials are used to add texture and design. After all the layers have been applied, a print is “lifted” onto moistened polyester material with a rolling pin. The pressure applied by the rolling pin allows the clay to adhere to the canvas, transferring the image from the slab to the canvas. I enjoy this medium because it is a relatively simple and organic process. The child in me comes out, and I am free to have fun and be imaginative.
